Featured Event: Principles and Priorities federal budget exercise

Event Dates and Times

2/10/2018
The Green Room in the Croatan Building on the ECU campus in Greenville NC
East Carolina University’s Department of Political Science and The Concord Coalition invite the public to attend “Principles and Priorities,” a federal budget exercise, on February 10, 2018. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon in the Green Room in the Croatan Building on the ECU campus in Greenville. Congressman Walter Jones, (R) who represents North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District, will attend the event and listen to the discussions of the committees. Citizens must register in advance to participate in the event at http://bit.ly/2DxxbTV

The two-hour activity challenges citizens to play the role of lawmaker for a day, reviewing and voting on a wide range of budget proposals involving entitlement programs, defense, health care, discretionary spending and taxes. Working in small groups, participants will debate and perhaps agonize over everything from changes in Social Security to how many nuclear submarines the Navy needs. Some proposals would increase deficits and others would reduce them. In the end, these “congressional committees” will present their budget recommendations to Congressman Jones.
“This experience helps people better understand how difficult it is to put the federal budget together,” said Marjorie Dufek, the North Carolina representative of The Concord Coalition. “Participants experience the challenges of making the tough choices that need to be made to put the nation on a sustainable fiscal path.”

The budget exercise was developed and has been presented around the country by The Concord Coalition. The program will be presented with the support from Citizen U, the East Carolina University Department of Political Science and The Concord Coalition.
