Farmville Central Club Hopes To Build Well In Malawi

The Farmville Central Watering Malawi Club will hold a Walk For Water event this Saturday in hopes of raising enough money to build a well in the small African country.

The walk will start at 10:00 a.m. with registration at 9:00 a.m.

There will be a $10.00 registration fee for everyone who would like to participate in the walk -- $5.00 for kids 12-years-old and under; $25.00 for families of 4 or more.

The walk will be 2 miles long, beginning at Farmville Central High School. Carson Banks, club president, says, "This walk will serve as a symbolic representation of the walk that the women and children in Malawi must endeavor every day just to access the little water that is available."

Participants will have the opportunity to carry empty jugs to the fountain in downtown Farmville, fill the containers with water, and carry the water back to the school.

Banks says it costs between $5,000 and $6,000 to build a well in Malawi.

Watering Malawi advocates long-term solutions to extreme poverty and hunger through access to clean water, simple irrigation, and sanitation systems.
