Mallory Byrum
I’ve been a Girl Scout since I was five years old and a few years ago I earned my Gold Award, which is equivalent to the Eagle for Boy Scouts. In my project, I addressed the issue of literacy awareness in my community. I wrote a children’s book about my town’s history, and talked to little kids at daycares and afterschool programs about the importance of becoming strong readers. This year I have volunteered at the local elementary school with the “Reading Buddies” program, helping children learn to read.
In the fall, I will be attending East Carolina University as part of the Future Pirate Nurse Village. I plan to major in nursing, minor in Spanish, and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. In ten years, I definitely see myself working in the Pediatric ICU at the new Children’s Hospital that is currently being built in Greenville, North Carolina.
