1 roll of pizza dough from the dairy case
1 lb. ground beef
½ c. onion, chopped
1 (15 oz.) can diced tomatoes
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
1/3 c. Parmesan cheese
1 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. dry basil
1 tsp. fennel seed
2 (6 oz or 8 oz) pkg Mozzarella cheese slices
Add onion to meat and cook until brown and onion is tender. Drain any grease. Stir in tomatoes, paste, Parmesan and seasonings; simmer 15 minutes. Open dough and press into bottom and 1 inch up sides of 9 x 13 inch pan which has been greased with olive oil and sprinkled with yellow corn meal. Cover with half the Mozzarella and meat sauce; repeat layers. Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with additional Parmesan cheese. Let stand 15 minutes before serving.
If you wish, you may substitute 1 lb Italian sausage, taken out of the casing for the ground beef. If you wish, you may also saute additional onion, mushrooms or bell peppers and layer with the meat sauce. However, always have the top layer as meat sauce.
