1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses (Sorghum molasses by all means)
2 1/4 cup plain flour
1 tsp each soda, cinnamon and ginger
1/2 tsp salt
Cream butter, shortening and sugar together. Beat in molasses and egg. Mix remaining dry ingredients and work into butter mixture. Roll into 1 inch balls and roll in additional sugar. Place on a lightly greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart and bake at 350 deg about 12 minutes. Allow to cool a minute on the sheet before removing to a rack to cool completely. These need to be eaten with a cup of coffee to reach their full potential, but a cold glass of milk will work.
