It appears that a more winter-like weather pattern will continue across the Southeast into the first week of March. December and January temperatures averaged between 4 and 5 degrees above normal. February has been different as temperatures have averaged near normal. Chilly air will return to our area for the next few days followed by some rain at the end of the week. Thereafter, the weather pattern will go into a stormy and chilly pattern that will extend through at least the first week of March.
There is also the potential for another winter storm during the 8 to 16-day period. It is certainly not unusual to have winter storms in early March. I remember the March 1-2 storm of 1980 that brought a widespread 1 to 2 feet of snow to eastern Carolina. Historical records in North Carolina indicate a storm brought 20 to 30 inches of snow, with locally heavier amounts, on March 1-2, 1927. Don't put away the winter coats and gloves just yet.
