Tropical Season Still Looks Active

Weather conditions across the globe suggest another active tropical season.

It is hard to think about hurricanes and all the flooding it can cause when you're going through a drought.  I do have a few thoughts about the upcoming season.  I  believe the season will be active as we move into August and September.  Ocean temperatures along the East Coast are above normal this year and that will act to contribute additional heat energy to a developing tropical system later in the summer and fall.  In addition, we usually see more storms when La Nina conditions are present.  La Nina occurs when ocean temperatures are cooler than normal in the equatorial Pacific Ocean and that has been the case over the past year.  La Nina creates less wind shear and that gives tropical systems a better chance to develop and become strong in the Atlantic Basin.  The big question we're all waiting on is whether one of these storms makes it to our coast this year.  We'll know the answer by the end of the season in November.
