We've seen a lot of shower and thunderstorm activity across eastern North Carolina this week but some big changes are on the way. Drier and more stable air will begin moving into our area on Thursday and continue through Memorial Day Weekend. A stationary front has been sitting just to our west for the past few days and that has created frequent showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. The front will dissipate on Wednesday as high pressure aloft and at the surface become dominant features in our weather pattern. We should see highs in the middle to upper 80s Friday then flirt with 90° all weekend in most inland communities. Coastal residents will see highs top out in the lower 80s through the weekend. Chances for rain will gradually diminish as we head through the end of the week. It looks like a great weekend for the beaches with fairly light winds and warm temperatures.
The good news for the farmers and gardeners is that much of eastern North Carolina has seen enough rain to kick the growing season in high gear. We will see considerable drying over the weekend into early next week as we see the temperatures soar. It will be a big taste of heat as we kick off the unofficial start of the summer season. Long-range forecasts suggest a near normal rainfall summer along with hot temperatures. We will see a great growing season if that forecast verifies.
