It was an average year for rainfall across much of eastern Carolina. Most locations were within a few inches on normal as we closed out the year on December 31. The WITN Weather Station actually ended up the year about 4 inches above normal while New Bern was about a tenth of an inch below their normal of 52 inches. Rainfall in Raleigh was about 2 inches below normal. Showers came often enough to prevent severe dryness across the area. Typically, we see about 20 to 25 percent of our moisture from various tropical systems that cross through our area. Fortunately, we didn't see a direct hit by a hurricane this year. Overall, it was a decent year for crops since we avoided long periods of dryness and also excessive rainfall that could have been caused by a hurricane.
