A moderate to severe drought continues across eastern North Carolina.

Despite some recent rainfall, much of eastern North Carolina remains in a moderate to severe drought.  As of July 12, the southeastern corner of the state from Wilmington to Jacksonville and Morehead City were in an extreme drought.  The remainder of the area along Highway 17 to the coast were in a severe drought.  Further north and west to Interstate 95, most communities were experiencing a moderate drought.  Scattered showers and thunderstorms helped a few communities Wednesday night but only about 30% of the area got significant rainfall.  Current forecasts suggest an extended period of dry weather is on the way.  The next chance of significant rainfall is at least a week away.  Temperatures will remain pleasant the next couple of days but the heat will rebuild into eastern North Carolina next week as highs soar well into the 90s.
