August temperatures were above normal throughout much of the world. Overall, temperatures were about .6° above the 30-year average. A similar rise was seen in July. The Arctic and Antarctic were quite warm. Temperatures in the Antarctic were about 7° above normal. The last time the August global temperature was below normal was 1990. At that time the reading was .05° below the long-term averages. Overall, the global climate trend since Nov. 16, 1978: +0.14 C per decade.
Eastern North Carolina has seen a hot summer as well. We have averaged between 2° and 3° above normal with well below normal rainfall until late August, with the arrival of Hurricane Irene. The first week of September has been close to normal and the Climate Prediction Center now forecasts temperatures to be near normal for most of September. If so, it would be a big change from the scorching heat of summer.
