The tropical waters are continuing to warm up and they have produced the first tropical storm of the season. Tropical Storm Arlene formed Tuesday in the southern Gulf of Mexico and will move into Mexico just south of Tampico on Thursday. Arlene should be a strong tropical storm as she enters the coast. It will bring some much needed rainfall to southern Texas over the next few days. Elsewhere, the tropics are quiet but that is not unusual for this time of year. Late June and July are frequently seen as the quiet before the season kicks into full gear in August and September. The peak of the season is around September 10 so that is still over two months away. The forecast calls for an active season with several major hurricanes reaching category 3 or higher. The big question is whether any of these storms will hit our area. It is much too early to give a call on that issue but Arlene does serve as a reminder that the true storm season is not far away.
