Sunny skies have returned to eastern North Carolina after several days of rainfall. It rained for five days in a row in most locations across the area. As much as 20 inches or more of rain fell along the Highway 17 corridor from Jacksonville northward into Windsor. The rainfall was caused by an area of low pressure that formed off the South Carolina coast on Wednesday followed9wed by the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole that moved across eastern North Carolina late Thursday. Significant flooding occurred along many of the rivers and streams across this area with the Cashie River near Windsor and Swift Creek near Vanceboro being some of the area's worst. The flooding is gradually subsiding as drier conditions have arrived. Sunshine should continue each day through the weekend giving residents time to clean up from the damage and return to a sense of normalcy.
