The latest drought monitor update across the Southeast suggests portions of eastern North Carolina are entering into a severe drought. Rainfall has been sparse over the past few weeks as temperatures have been soaring into the 90s during the afternoon. The WITN Weather Station received less than an inch during the entire month of May. We usually get about 4 inches. The dry weather has continued into the first week of June with little relief in site. There will be a slight risk of a shower or thunderstorm on Sunday but most locations will probably not see much if any rain over the next week. Temperatures will return to the 90s over the weekend after some slight and brief cooling on Friday. The extreme heat will continue through next week.
