As we enter spring I'm sure some of us are looking ahead to what kind of spring and summer we can expect. The spring forecast is largely an extension of the winter which gave us above normal temperatures and slightly below normal rainfall. The slight deficit in rainfall across eastern North Carolina has caused a moderate drought to develop. The warm weather has given us a quick start to spring but we need the occasional showers to keep our crops and lawn growing.
The new forecast out from the Climate Prediction for summer suggests another hot one for much of the Southeast including eastern North Carolina. Last year was a scorching hot summer with little rainfall. There was a severe drought over much of the area until Hurricane Irene came in late August. The forecast for our area is for normal rainfall during the summer. If so, we would average 5 to 6 inches of rainfall each month from June to August. It would be great news for the growing season if that happens. Let's just hope we don't have to fight another hurricane this year.
I'll update the forecast again next month.
