It is hard to believe that we had a drought across portions of eastern North Carolina during the past summer. Precipitation in our area is usually well spaced during the year. This year has been different. We saw heavy rainfall during the first two months of the year. It was followed by drier than normal conditions from late spring through much of the summer. Still, we were close to normal for the year until late September. During the last week of September the WITN Weather Station received over 20 inches of rain and now we are about 17 inches above the normal of 42.50" as of October 20. October has been a dry month with only .41" since the beginning of the month. Rainfall will still be above normal for the year even if no rain fell between now and the end of the year. We usually get about 50" annually.
