The Tropics Remain Quiet

The tropics should remain quiet for the next few days but activity should pick up by the second week of August.

The tropical season has been relatively quiet so far.  We've seen two tropical storms with one, Alex, becoming a hurricane before landfall in Mexico.  It appears that we'll see quiet conditions for the next week.  However, indications point to a more active period in the tropics by the second week of August.  The main reason for the expected increase in activity is the projected decrease in wind shear across the tropical Atlantic Ocean.  Wind shear keeps tropical systems from organizing into a storm.  Also, ocean temperatures are above normal for this time of year and that should add extra energy for the storms that do develop.  The latest forecasts suggest we should see around 15 to 20 storms before the 2010 season is over.
