After a year-long break for the drought, much of eastern North Carolina has now returned to abnormally dry conditions. April was extremely dry for much of the area. The WITN Weather Station received just slightly more than one inch for the entire month. This compares with an average of about four inches. In addition, temperatures have been running above normal since the beginning of April. We averaged about two degrees above normal in April and May has been about 10 degrees above average thus far. The next week continues to look rather dry, except for some isolated shower activity on Saturday. So far the seasonal forecasts indicate rainfall should be near normal during the summer months this year. The forecasts also suggest this summer will likely be hotter than last summer. Hot weather conditions will mean that more showers will be needed to offset an increase in evaporation rates during the summer months.
