A review of the data indicates it has been a cold winter across eastern North Carolina.

Meteorological winter is defined as the period December through February since they are the coldest three months of the year.  Using that definition we can conclude that the 2009-10 winter across our area was once of the coldest in several years.  An average of airport temperatures indicated New Bern was 4.16 below degrees normal, Goldsboro was 4.33 degrees below normal and Elizabeth City was 2.77 degrees below normal.  The average of all three locations indicated a temperature of 3.75 degrees below normal for those three months.  This compares to .04 degrees above normal last year and 2.39 degrees above average during the 2007-08 winter.  Now we can say without a doubt that it was a "very cold" winter.
