Temperatures across the Southeast, including eastern North Carolina, have been well below normal this winter. A tabulation of temperatures for the period from December 1 through February 15 indicate that we've averaged about 3.45 degrees below normal The last winter it was this cold occurred in the 2002-2003 winter when temperatures were similar to this year. What makes this winter more severe has been the considerable moisture that most locations have received. The WITN Weather Station has received more than 30 inches of rainfall since early November. Normal rainfall would have been about 13 inches. Also, many areas have gotten more snowfall than usual this winter. The big question is when will spring finally arrive. For now it looks like we'll stay in the chill through the end of February.
