The first month of our winter was a cold one across the United States. It was the 14th coldest December since records have been kept in 1895. The average nationwide temperature in December 2009 was 30.2 F. This was -3.2 F cooler than the average from 1901-2000. The temperature trend for the period of record (1895 to present) is 0.1 degrees Fahrenheit per decade. Consequently, the nation has seen about a 1 degree increase in temperatures since the late 1800s. At the WITN Weather Station our temperatures was bout 2 degrees below normal for the month. The first 14 days of January have been well below below normal but we'll see near normal temperatures for the next week to 10 days. Still, it looks like a chilly January for our area.
