Although the calendar indicates winter began December 21 meteorologists usually define winter from December through February. Those three months are the coldest three months of the year on average. In December the WITN Weather Station averaged about 2 degrees below normal. The first eight days of January have averaged about 10 degrees below normal with very cold weather expected over the weekend. It appears that we'll have a gradual warming trend starting early next week so more seasonable temperatures are expected. So far eastern North Carolina has missed the snow but the winter is early. The forecast for the rest of the winter is generally wet with below normal temperatures. Snow lovers may get their wish before the winter is over.
