A Real Taste Of Winter

Eastern North Carolina has experienced a taste of winter over the last week with more to come.

Colder air has invaded much of the United States over the past week.  Snow cover extends from western North Carolina north and west to the North Pole.  The extent of the snow is helping to keep much of the nation in below normal temperatures.  Another blast of cold air will arrive on Friday and stay through the weekend.  The big question is whether it will snow and how much.  It is usually difficult to have snow in eastern North Carolina because of our southerly location and the Atlantic Ocean.  Both factors keep our climate fairly mild so it takes a lot of cold air to cause snow here.  One of those opportunities will come later Thursday night into Friday.  It doesn't look like there will be much moisture associated with the system that comes through early Friday.  But we all know that it doesn't take much snow in our area to cause problems.  Early indications point to around an inch of snow in some locations but there may be some folks that don't see any snow at all.  The chance for snow will end Friday morning and that will set the stage for a very cold weekend.  We should finally see some moderation of the cold by early next week.
