Snow Avoids The East

A coastal storm that is making headlines up and down the East coast, is burying much of the Mid Atlantic and Northeast with deep snow.

If you're a snow lover across eastern Carolina, your heart is breaking right about now. While much of interior North Carolina and the Northeast is seeing a huge snowstorm, a cold rain is the result in the East. For snow here in the East, you need the right elements to come together. First of all, the cold air. A bitterly cold airmass has to be in place across the northeast, to pump cold air into the system. In this case it's cold, but not especially cold in the Northeast. As a result, a cold rain. Another factor is the track of the storm system. When it tracks near the coast, more moist Atlantic air is pumped into the system, lessening the chance of snow. If the storm tracks a little further off shore, the cold air has a better chance of getting entrained in the storm.

Being from Long Island, I used to salivate over storms like this. A Blizzard Warning is in effect for the region. Snow amounts in excess of a foot are likely, paralyzing much of the region. As a matter of fact much of Virginia up to New England will be buried under 1 to 2 feet of snow. Pretty much insuring them of a white Christmas. For us, the snow is but a dream. This storm could produce a few flurries as it ends. But no accumulation is expected.

As for the week of Christmas, no snow appears to be in the cards. In fact we could see a storm system move well to our west meaning mild and damp conditions. Santa will more than likely need some wheels for his sleigh.
