The Scoop On Storm Coverage

Weigh in on how the media covers storms like "Danny."

Tropical Storm Danny is swirling up the East Coast, but Friday's forecast shows the storm will most likely stay offshore.

Most experts agree... Danny's biggest threats on the current track are dangerous rip currents and high surf. Some rain is possible, even scattered thunderstorms. Rainfall in most spots is forecast to be less than an inch from Friday evening into Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. There could be some heavier downpours at the beach. Wind gusts on the coast could be 40 miles an hour or so.

Just to put that in perspective:  a severe thunderstorm can produce gusts up to 50+ miles per hour and rainfalls amounts of 3+ inches per hour. Of course, severe thunderstorm systems often move fast. But Danny is expected to accelerate quickly up the coast as well.

WITN has been closely monitoring Danny since it formed. We continue to bring you updates on WITN and witn.com, just as we did with Hurricane Bill in recent weeks. Danny deserves our attention, passing so close to the coast. We know how track's change, and we also know that a tropical storm can cause serious problems with flooding and winds.

Some suggest the media "hypes" these storms. And yes, sometimes the media does, on a local and national scale.

Here at WITN, we work hard to make sure our coverage is appropriate... we want to give you the information without creating panic. As one of our promotions says, we want you to "Be Prepared, Not Scared."

That's really our goal. We think about all the things you have on your schedule...  football games, church picnics, trips to the beach...  and we work to help you make an informed decision about how to plan your day or weekend.

Our coverage of "Danny" and other storms is based on the threat to you and your neighbors... nothing else... and guided by our weather team's decades of experience, as well as state, regional and national weather resources.
