The data is in and 2008 was another dry year at the WITN Weather Station.
It was another dry year for much of eastern North Carolina. The average rainfall across our region ranges from 45 to 55 inches annually with the largest amount near the coast. In 2007 we had one of the driest years in modern times with many areas receiving only about 60% of normal. At the WITN Weather Station we typically have about 50 inches of rain each year. Rainfall total for 2007 was only 33 inches or 17 inches below the normal. We got a bit luckier in 2008 as nearly 39 inches of rain fell at the station. Still, this amount was over 20% below normal. 2007 and 2008 stand in great contrast to the flooding rainfall received from the numerous tropical storms and hurricanes during the late 90s into the early 2000s. What is ahead for this year. For now the forecast is for near normal rainfall but time will tell.
