Heavy rainfall across North Carolina is helping to alleviate the drought, which is now in its second year.

Rainfall over the past two days has at least put a dent into the long-term drought that has been plaguing much of the Southeast. Eastern North Carolina has certainly seen its share of dry weather over the past two years. Rainfall amounts have averaged between one to three inches since Wednesday evening. More showers are expected, with an additional one inch of rain possible by Saturday evening. A cold front will finally sweep the moisture offshore on Saturday night with sunshine and highs in the 50s on Monday and Tuesday. Some representative rainfall amounts by 6:00 pm Friday include the following: Greenville - 3.13 Beaufort - 2.69 Cape Hatteras - 2.30 Edenton - 2.22 Ahoskie - 2.07 Kenansville - 1.65 Goldsboro - 1.62 Jacksonville - 1.44 New Bern - 1.40 Elizabeth City - 1.33 Rocky Mount - 1.25 Washington 1.07 Roanoke Rapids - .40 Manteo - .26
