The drought continues in portions of North Carolina despite wet conditions at the end of this week.

The drought across North Carolina has improved since the beginning of this year but rainfall is still below normal.  The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) still places much of northeastern North Carolina in a moderate drought.  A small area near the North Carolina/Virginia border is still in an extreme drought.  Southern North Carolina has now returned to near normal moisture conditions due to the recent rainfall.  Most of western North Carolina,  south and west of Asheville, remain in a severe to exceptional drought.  Prospects for rain in the short-term are good as showers are expected in most areas on Friday and Saturday.  The winter forecast currently indicates normal to slightly below normal rainfall but not as bad as last year when conditions were very dry.
