Soil moisture conditions continue to improve after over a year of drought across Eastern North Carolina.

Rainfall over the last few months has eased the drought conditions across the area.  Most areas are only slightly below the average annual rainfall for the area.  If the trends continue we should be well on our way out of the drought by this winter.  As of September 23rd only the extreme southwestern portion of the state was in an extreme drought.  In Eastern North Carolina severe drought conditions continued across the extreme northeast corner from Ahoskie to Elizabeth City.  Other areas reported abnormally dry or moderate drought conditions.  The south-central portion of state from Fayetteville to near Raleigh are classified as normal soil conditions.  The latest relief came on Wednesday through Friday of this week when much of the area received 1 to 3 inches of rain.  For many of us the recent rainfall has been a pleasant weather surprise.
