| Hurricane Ike is making news this Friday evening as he bears down on the Texas coast. Ike has sustained winds of 110 mph with higher wind gusts. The nearly 57,000 residents were told to leave Galveston yesterday and the vast majority have left and moved to higher ground. Ike certainly will be destructive to Galveston as well as many other comm unties along the upper Texas coast. It leads everyone to think about just how much development should be allowed in hurricane prone areas of the country. We face a similar dilemma in North Carolina since significant development has occurred in our area over the past few decades. So far our coastal areas have withstood these storms fairly well. The last category 3 hit was Hurricane Fran in 1996 which brought sustained winds of over 100 mph. We've seen several other hurricanes since then but none have reached the category 3 level. We don't know how long our luck will hold out but what is happening to Galveston and Houston tonight should give us a reason to ponder. |
