Drought Continues Despite Rain

Numerous showers dotted Eastern North Carolina on Wednesday but the drought continues.

Despite significant rainfall in portions of North Carolina on Wednesday it appears the drought is far from over. The northern half of Eastern North Carolina is still in a moderate drought while coastal and southern areas are a notch below that at abnormally dry. The western half of the state is suffering through severe, extreme and even exceptional drought over the southwestern corner. The most serious problems are occurring in the area just west of Charlotte to Asheville. Will it take a tropical system to get out of the dryness? It is estimated that nearly 25% of rainfall in the Southeast is caused by tropical systems. Last year we didn't get much tropical moisture and we ended the year with one of the worst droughts on record. The questions to be answered is whether this year will be different.
