Gulf moisture should work northward into Eastern North Carolina by the weekend giving the area the best chance for general rainfall that has been seen in a few months. Much of the area remains in moderate drought conditions so any rainfall would be welcomed at this point. Last year much of the area received only 60% of average rainfall and most areas are below normal so far this year. Believe it or not the average rainfall for July is higher than for any other month of the year. The problem is the evaporation rate can be fairly high on hot and sunny afternoons and that does not allow any rain to stay on the surface very long. Through the first half of July less than two inches of rain have fallen at the WITN Weather Station. We usually receive around six inches during the month so maybe the law of averages will catch up before the month is over.
