Summer officially begins Friday evening but this month has already been a hot one.
On the calendar we can all agree that summer begins on June 20 at 7:59 pm Eastern time. From a meteorological point of view summer is indicated by the three warmest months of the year - June, July and August. You don't have to look at the calendar to know that summer felt like it began in Eastern North Carolina earlier this month. Temperatures reached or came close to 100 degrees for six days dating June 5th through the 10th and so far this month we've averaged nearly five degrees above normal. The month of May was actually about one degree below normal but June has more than made up for it. It appears that seasonably warm temperatures will greet us on the first day of summer and we may even get lucky enough to see a few showers over the weekend. However, it appears the atmosphere will quickly dry out and very hot temperatures could return to the area by the middle to latter part of next week. The bottom line is that summer is here to stay and we better get ready for it.
