Showers Mask Unique Full Moon

For the last two days our big topic has been the welcomed rain that moved into the area...

Tonight the showers and clouds are blocking our view of  the biggest full moon this year.  In fact, the moon is 14% bigger and 30% brighter!  So why is this?  It has to do with the moon's orbit.  The moon's orbit is in the shape of an ellipse, meaning on one side of the ellipse it is 30,000 miles closer to the Earth.  The two ends of the moon's orbit are called apogee and perigee.   Apogee is the farthest point and perigee is the nearest.  This weeks full moon is a "perigee moon" located on the near side of the ellipse making the moon appear bigger and brighter.
