Temperatures will soar into the lower 90s for the first few days of fall and will approach record-breaking levels. A large ridge of high pressure along the Southeast coast will maintain sunny skies and and light southwesterly breeze. The pattern has been persistent for much of the month and is making drought conditions worse, especially in the northern half of the state. Areas near Roanoke Rapids are considered in a severe drought. There is little chance for rain until the end of the weekend or next week. It would take a considerable amount of rain to ease the dry conditions across the area. Temperatures will return to near normal conditions by Sunday and the first part of next week. We'll just have to wait to find out whether or not some moisture will come along with the cooling temperatures.
