Tropical Storm Igor formed today in the eastern Atlantic Ocean and almost 3,800 miles away from the North Carolina coast.  The storm poses no immediate threat to any land masses but will need to be watched beyond this weekend.  Igor is expected to become a powerful hurricane during the next 5 to 6 days as he slowly moves west and west-northwest in the open Atlantic.  Igor is the ninth named storm of the season.  We typically see about 10 to 11 named storms during an entire season.  Thus another active season is occurring in the tropics.  The forecasts from last winter and spring seem to be on target as far as the number of storms.  Of course, most critical will be possible impact of these storms on the United States.  It is too early to to make that judgment yet.
