It has been a long and hot summer across eastern North Carolina. For example, during the first 13 days of August the WITN Weather Station has reached 90 or higher on 10 days. Average temperatures should be in the upper 80s during the afternoons. We will get a bit of a break this weekend as highs only hit the upper 80s in most locations. The beaches will be a few degrees cooler with highs only in the middle 80s. You will need to watch out for dangerous rip currents, especially from Cape Hatteras northward along the Outer Banks. Showers have been more numerous lately and that has helped to temper the heat as well. Very hot weather will eventually return but at least we'll have a slight reprieve from the oppressiveness of summer over the next few days.
