Drought Continues Across Northern North Carolina

A moderate drought continues across much of northern North Carolina.

Moderate drought conditions continue across much of northern North Carolina.  The area generally extends from near Highway 64 north to the Virginia border.  A small sliver of northern North Carolina near Roanoke Rapids is considered in the extreme drought category.  Areas south of Highway 64 in eastern North Carolina are considered abnormally dry.  Overall rainfall for the year is near normal but that was primarily because of heavy rain and snow during the winter months.  Rainfall has averaged below normal in most locations since June 1 and that has caused the dry conditions.  Some showers are possible over the next few days but they will not be enough to end the very dry conditions.
