Is Carolina On Your Mind?

Ron from Craven County sent us an e-mail sharing his thoughts about referring to our area as "Carolina". He doesn't like the use of "Coastal Carolina" or "Eastern Carolina" to describe our area. Read his note and share your thoughts with us.

I am a native NORTH Carolinian.  People from out of state have called this area Carolina for years and it is running over into our media and the naming of local businesses.

When the airport name was changed from Craven Regional to Coastal Carolina Regional so people would have a better chance of knowing where they are, it was very confusing.  Craven County is definitely a location and is on the map.  Coastal Carolina and Carolina are not places and are not on any present day map that I know of.  When people arrive at Coastal Carolina Regional Airport why would they know where they are, better than when it was called Craven County Regional Airport.?

On your local broadcasts eastern NORTH Carolina is usually referred to as eastern carolina. The state of my birth and the state I love is NORTH Carolina and I find it offensive, as do most locals I talk to, to have her called carolina.  I can't imagine that people from out of state would be offended if you were to call this area by it's correct name.  If you call this area by it's correct name I think all would be pleased.  This letter contains questions but I am not looking for an answer or justification for calling NORTH Carolina carolina for as I see it there is no justification.

I dont think this is really an issue worth arguement there are many other thing like poverty being the bigest state in this country and how to fix things such as these i think too much time is spent bickering and there should be more time spent on problems solving.

Nicknames are not as welcome if given to an area by outsiders ass they would be if given by those that have loved her since birth. Carolina is a nickname given to North Carolina by people from out of state.

I think it should be called what they want to call it. Remember Simmons-Knott? The thing it, if you keep the name the same, over time, people will know where it is. Raleigh is in the center of the state. Most everyone knows where it is. So,'re right...they should have kept the name the same...Simmons-Knott Airport.

Ron, welcome to Eastern NC - home of East Carolina University. The eastern portion of NC has unique and lovely people who I think are fine calling the area Eastern Carolina. Many areas refer to themselves by nicknames that may not be proper - ie the "Four States", "Panhandle" and "Tri-City" to name a few nicknames that are used in many areas on their local news. Eastern Carolina is unique to our area and I don't know locals that see it as a slight to the great state of NC. If we must be proper I guess we will be the home of the pirates - ENCU! No Thanks - Happy to call East Carolina Home.
