Vonda Norris of Chinquapin wonders what is going on with school scheduling these days. Read on to see what she thinks. If you've got something to say, send it to witn@witn.com and we may post it as a blog.

If the kids start any earlier, they will be going year 'round, eventually! I don't understand. When I was going to school we didn't start until September and managed to squeeze 180 days in before June, with a 2 week or more break at Christmas! Not to mention the fact that we took exams before Christmas break. So what has happened in the last 8 to 20 years?

From the looks of the most recent poll, most people are not in favor of an earlier start to the school year that legislators are trying to push thru the General Assembly now. About 4 years ago I helped lobby to have the school year start later in August. The majority of the voters agreed and so the current law was passed. Now there is the education lobby who wants to change the law again against what the majority of parents and business people desire. It is BAD for families and the tourist industry (our largest industry)to reverse the current law. If it is passed, we will be going back to "business as usual" and Raleigh will control more of our lives just as it is controlling ALL state employees from start to finish! Beware!

The problem is that alot of schools went to a semester system instead of a quarterly system. Basically instead of 90 day semesters, you had 60 day quarters. That way you took all of your exams before Christmas, spring, and summer breaks.
