In the past year, several prominent stars who are popular with teenagers and tweens have been mired in controversy.
Hannah Montana of “Miley Cyrus” fame has been photographed half-naked. She’s also been targeted in recent days for a photo
called racist against Asian-Americans.
Vanessa Hudgens of “High School Musical” fame has also been involved in controversy, as a naked photo circulated the internet.
Actress Lindsay Lohan and singer Brittany Spears made headlines, and certainly not for the right reasons. Brittany’s teen sister, Jamie, got pregnant.
Now we have the allegations that singer Chris Brown beat his singer girlfriend, Rihanna. The list seems to go on and on.
So what’s a parent to do? Many are turning off or tuning out the shows or music that made these stars famous. Experts say talking to your teen or tweens is an important step, using the latest celebrity controversy as a teaching tool. In fact, experts say it can help you open the door to discussing life-changing issues, like drugs, alcohol, premarital sex and self-respect.
How do you help your kids handle these difficult issues? We hope you’ll comment and share your thoughts.
