Over the past week we have been contacted by many of you concerned that there is rampant voter fraud in one Eastern Carolina county.

Over the past week we have been contacted by many of you concerned that there is rampant voter fraud in one Eastern Carolina county.

The e-mail starts off by saying there was nearly a riot at one polling place because of illegal voting. It said “bus loads” of residents from a local facility were attempting to vote with the help of staff members. The e-mail has plenty of facts and it sounded like a good story.

We receive dozens of news tips each day here at WITN. Some by telephone, many others via e-mail. As responsible journalists it is our obligation to check out these stories, no matter how believable they sound.

We checked with multiple sources to attempt to verify this story. The local elections director said it never occurred, and the administrator of the facility where the voters were supposed to have come from says their facility only has two residents who are registered to vote.

WITN reports facts, not rumors. That’s why, even in this blog, we are hesitant to reveal too much of this rumor in fear it will cause others to further repeat it.

We do appreciate your news tips…so keep them coming. We just wanted to let everyone know that this news tip never happened
