Outrage Over ElectriCities Bills

WITN has been getting a tremendous amount of feedback since we started a series of reports last week called "Power Struggle."

WITN has been getting a tremendous amount of feedback since we started a series of reports last week called "Power Struggle."

The stories have been looking at the 32 municipalities that make up the NC Eastern Municipal Power Agency, managed by ElectriCities.

Officials say the major reason for the higher rates is the debt from buying into nuclear facilities decades ago.   That debt stands at 2.4-billion dollars and is spread out over the 32 municipalities.

Some of what we've reported over the past week: Governor Perdue called her own bill at her home in New Bern "exorbitant, there is no independent oversight, rates charged by NCEMPA are higher than the national average, there are several bills pending in the state legislature targeting the power agency, and that New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis is leading an effort to try and intervene in the Progress/Duke merger to try and bring about some relief.

There are many questions that linger, as many of our viewers are sharing with me through email, phone calls, and facebook messages.

I am continuing to investigate much of what you are telling me, and encourage you to continue to provide your feedback and to keep watching for more 'Power Struggle" reports.
