Scientists and health experts are gathered in California at Stanford University to discuss the dangers of sitting. There's probably standing room only for this one.
Several studies suggest that people who spend prolonged periods on their behind are more likely to be overweight, have heart disease or even die. On the other hand, my own independent observations, while certainly not scientific, indicate people who don't spend an inordinate amount of time on their duff may be overweight, have heart disease or even die. Go figure.
The goal of the conference is to discuss the existing science on the topic and what research is still needed. And experts admit, they hope policymakers will eventually be able to issue guidelines about how much time in a seat is too much.
There's probably no question that working in a job where you are sitting all day is not the best for your health. You need to get up and move around a little bit. That just seems to be common sense. So here's the question. Do we really need guidelines to tell us that?
