A high school finds itself the target of a federal lawsuit after it disbanded a student Christian club for what it called budgetary reasons, but left dozens of other clubs active.

The Alliance Defense Fund filed a religious discrimination lawsuit against Half Hollow Hills High School East on Long Island. ADF says the four year-old Christian club Ichthus was cancelled, while other clubs like a gay-straight alliance, Amnesty International, a fashion club, a future lawyers of America, and a Constitution club are all allowed to continue.

The school principal says cancelling Ichthus isn't discrimination and was based solely on financial concerns. He also said the funding for Ichthus was cut along with about 16 other clubs. He says a total of three clubs were cancelled.

What do you think? Do you feel the Ichthus club was unfairly targeted? Do you think it should be reinstated? Do you think schools should allow religious clubs?  Do you think they should allow gay-straight clubs?

For more background check out www.alliancedefensefund.org where you can read the entire news release and the lawsuit.

I'm a alumni of that High School and a Catholic and I'm not offended at all. We are in a recession people, if no one goes to the club than get rid of it, put the money into a program people actually go to. They cut a crap load of programs last year too. It isn't discrimination at all.

The problem Kim is that what you claim this blog is doing, turning this into a Christian vs. gays thing, has already been done. The school district did it when it decided to get rid of the Christian club, but allow the gay club to continue.

Posted by: Kim What were the other 2 clubs that were cut? I'd also like to know if the school gave the club an opportunity to finance its own operation before disbanding it. I think this blog is irresponsible to turn this into a Xtian vs. gays without naming the others that were cut. Good for page views, I'm sure, but not for Xtian/gay relations.

Posted by: Anonymous Im an athiest and im fine in fact my life is absolutley amazing. Im not saying its wrong to believe in god, but what bothers me is that all you so called "christians" discriminate against us athiests, and are very rude and inhumane to us, we are human beings just like you we just dont believe in god, science has proven that evolution is true and their is evidence but what ever floats your boat, we dont discriminate you.

If I were a parent of a child who wanted to attend the club, I would hold it in my house. Don't let money get in the way of something like that. It's not right, fight for your rights. You don't need $$$$ for a club. You need people.

Posted by: Beth All of these type actions are fulfilling Bible prophesy. The Bible tells us there will be people falling away from the truth. Earthquakes, famines, wars and rumors of wars are all signs that Christ's return is near. God has written that one day every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord. Nothing can change this fact no matter what they believe.

The comments have spoken the truth...nothing more for me to add.

Fair is fair. If the school allows a gay-straight club, it should allow a Christain club. If a gay club was banned, it would be considered discrimination. Why is it always the Christians that get the boot? That's not discrimination to Christians but any other group it would be considered discrimination and I as a Christian am tired of being discriminated against. AMEN TO BOB and PENDERAGON. And yes to Varian...Christians are ALWAYS the ones that are discriminated against. Any other religion that has negative comments thrown to them is considered to be either a hate comment or just plain discrimination. Other organizations/groups can have their opinions voiced in public and if Christians disagree w/ those opinions we are not being "tolerate" of others feelings. What about ours? Is this a free country for everyone to voice our opinions or is it only free to voice your opinions if you aren't a Christian?

Government Schools are indoctrination centers. They hate Christianity since they spread the religion of Secular Humanism. Teachers are overpaid and elitist union members without the ability to get real jobs. The administrators assure that the lies forced by the US Department of Education are forced upon children. Taking away the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion in our society (as the government wants to do) depends upon school districts eliminating Christian clubs, influence and God from our society. The government, in its hatred of God and His Creation, needs to be seen as the ultimate power and cannot submit itself to the Creator's will. For these reasons, this, and other, school districts hate Christians... but remember, humanity hated God's own son enough to crucify him, so of course they will hate us.

Just another Example of discrimination against Christians by the very-ones who are always screaming "Intolerance".
