"It Is What It Is"

I have a new most hated saying, "It is what it is!"

I have a new most hated saying, "It is what it is!"

I can't tell you how many times a day I hear this. Someone was talking to me about the way ECU lost to Arkansas and said, "It is what it is." I got into a conversation with another person about the cold and snow...they eventually said, "It is what it is." Another person talked about the holidays and the weight they put on. Again, the conversation ended with, "It is what it is."

Why has "It is what it is" become the "It" phrase in conversation? Is it the new "Yada, Yada, Yada," you know from the Seinfeld show? The characters on the show would get into a conversation and never really finish what they were saying, other than to say "Yada, Yada, Yada." It was left up to your imagination to figure out what they meant.

The problem with using "It is what it is" in conversation is that what "it" is may be different depending on who you're talking to. So what it is can really be anything. I guess it's a way of saying something without really saying anything!

Blah, blah, blah!
