"It Is What It Is"

I have a new most hated saying, "It is what it is!"

I have a new most hated saying, "It is what it is!"

I can't tell you how many times a day I hear this. Someone was talking to me about the way ECU lost to Arkansas and said, "It is what it is." I got into a conversation with another person about the cold and snow...they eventually said, "It is what it is." Another person talked about the holidays and the weight they put on. Again, the conversation ended with, "It is what it is."

Why has "It is what it is" become the "It" phrase in conversation? Is it the new "Yada, Yada, Yada," you know from the Seinfeld show? The characters on the show would get into a conversation and never really finish what they were saying, other than to say "Yada, Yada, Yada." It was left up to your imagination to figure out what they meant.

The problem with using "It is what it is" in conversation is that what "it" is may be different depending on who you're talking to. So what it is can really be anything. I guess it's a way of saying something without really saying anything!

Blah, blah, blah!

"How are you?", well I don't like being asked in a store I stop in, this question. Number 1, Most of the time I could give a good hour on how I am, and when I say back "fine, how are you", they don't respond???When did this start?? I work with the public and I simply say "Hi!" I dont feel some people want that invasion unless your really wanting to have a conversation concerning their well-being.

I'm tired over everyone saying, "Have a Blessed Day".

Great quote that says it all.

It may be a circular statement (not really saying anything at all) but it does have the benefit of being true. I heard a slightly better variation of it on Battlestar Galactica (my second time through, my wife's first); someone says "It is what it is until it isn't." It's a nice variation which is also true. But "it is what it is" implies that "it" cannot be changed, where the BSG variant is a little more hopeful.
