I remember a time when I didn't really think much about what I ate. I didn't worry about calories, fat content, sodium or carbohydrates. Those were the days (years ago) when the calories seemed to melt away. Not anymore.
Like many people, I am more conscious these days about how what I eat has an impact on how well my pants fit, or don't fit. I'm also more aware that what I eat isn't just about the size of my waistline. It's about real health. You know...clogged arteries and heart disease, etc.
The buzz word these days when it comes to heart-healthy eating is "trans-fat." The less you eat, the better. So says countless studies that say trans-fat is an artery clogger. There are also plenty of people and other studies which say all of those claims are a bunch of hooey!
While the trans-fat wars continue, it seems the anti trans-fat forces are winning. USA Today recently reported "Unilever, which sells more tubs of soft margarine spread than anyone, will unveil plans to remove all partially hydrogenated oils - artificial trans fats - from its soft-spread brands, including I Can't Believe It's Not Butter and Shedd's Spread."
So is all of this going to make me heart-healthy? I hope so. I would hate to think this is all about politics.
