Vacationing In NC

Where's your favorite place?

This week on the Today Show, the crew is showing off vacationing in different parts of the country.  Not a bad gig!  The week begins with Meredith and Ann in Lake George, NY.  On Tuesday, Matt and Al will be in Key West, FL.  The trips continue Wednesday in San Antonio and Thursday in Las Vegas.

Lucky for us, there are plenty of places to vacation right here in North Carolina.

One of the most memorable vacations I have had here was in Corolla on the Outer Banks.  Corolla, by the way, is not pronounced like the car name it looks like.  The Currituck County town is pronounced coh-RAHL-lah.  It rhymes with another car name, Impala.  But I digress.

My family in Chicago planned a trip to Corolla for September 2003.  There are great deals for the large houses near the beach when the off-season hits in September.  Unfortunately, there are also hurricanes.  Hurricane Isabel planned a visit to North Carolina the same week my family was planning to come.  As state officials were evacuating the Outer Banks, we were abandoning our vacation.  However, thanks to hurricane insurance, the King Family was able to reschedule for the following year.  We enjoyed the quiet comforts of Corolla with plenty of quality family time.

One of my favorite spots for a weekend getaway in Eastern Carolina is Beaufort in Carteret County.  My husband and I love this town so much, we considered naming our dog after it!  The pace is so slow and relaxing, and the waterfront is lined with cute shops and restaurants.  My favorite restaurants there, however, are not on the waterfront, so be sure to take the road less traveled if you plan to dine in Beaufort.  There are great local inns and bed-and-breakfasts to make for a relaxing vacation.

We've enjoyed Grandfather Mountain and Chimney Rock in the western part of the state.  There are so many great things to see in North Carolina, from the coast to the mountains.  What's your favorite?  You may also want to upload your vacation pictures on the Carolina Camera section of  Show us how much fun you're having!

my favorite place to go for vacation is Florida because it's just so peaceful and is just a calm place.
