Walter Cronkite is not only the best known and most respected television news anchor in television news history, he was actually the first "anchor." It was for him, the title so many of us now employ, was created. When trying to decide what to call the person who "holds it all together" during political coverage, a producer came up with the word "anchor" for Cronkite. How true it was.
You'd be hard-pressed to find a TV news journalist today who wouldn't want to be compared to Walter Cronkite. He set the standard for us all and reminds us what our job truly is. He was known as the "most trusted man in America." I can tell you from my anchor chair in the mornings, that's exactly what I endeavor to be for Eastern Carolina.
Television news has changed so much since Cronkite told America "the way it was" each evening. There are more voices than ever, thanks to the rise of the Internet and cable news channels. At this point, is there a most trusted man (or woman) in America?
Regardless, we owe it to Walter Cronkite for leading the way, lighting the torch of TV news grace, style, but mostly substance. He will forever be the first anchor.
