Some Of Today's Best & Brightest Students

I had the privilege Saturday of being the pronouncer for the 17th Annual Downeast Regional Spelling Bee held at Washington High School.

Close to 60 students from all across eastern Carolina were vying to be the best speller and earn an all expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

The day was filled with suspense. The students lined up across the stage. One by one they made their way to the microphone on the center of the stage to await their word. There was a great sense of relief everytime a speller heard the judge exclaim, "correct!" You could also see the disappointment when they heard the dreaded, "incorrect!"

The spelling bee went on for twenty rounds before a winner was finally declared. Mayee Zhu Of Hope Middle School in Winterville came out on top for the third time by correctly spelling sorghum.

Zhu now heads to D.C. in May for the national spelling bee. I'll certainly be pulling for her and wish her the best of luck.

While Zhu was the overall winner, all of the students who made it to the regional spelling bee deserve a round of applause for their hard work, dedication, and poise.

Congratulations to all!!

Why they call Spelling Competition "spelling BEE?" Does BEE stand for Best, Excellent, Extraordinary? Otherwise, BEE doesn't make sense since a bee does not know how to spell.
